How To Rock YOUR Bikini Body
HINT HINT….it’s not doing a million crunches a day or drinking a detox tea ;)
Summer is upon us and so are the feelings of pressure and increased advertisements to have a “toned” and “lean” bikini body!
Well, you know what the best way to have a bikini body is?? PUT ON A BIKINI!
That’s good news, my dears! You already have a rockin’ bikini body and you’re fabulous just the way you are. I know that it’s hard to overcome conditioning from the media, the fitness industry, and a multitude of other oppressive things shoved at you that tell you you’re not good enough the way you are, but we can learn to rebel against that. Ya’ll know I’m all about being a rebel.
Embracing self-acceptance and body positivity has been one of the best things I’ve ever done for my confidence, my relationships, and my overall quality of life. Instead of obsessing over whether or not my tummy will look cut enough in a bikini or if I have too much cellulite, this sunny season I’ve been more concerned about growing my business, being in a badass all-girl indie pop band. Instead of researching the latest diet fads and running myself ragged in the gym, I’m moving in ways that feel good, eating foods that I love intuitively, and living my damn life.
I have far more brain space and feel more connected to my work and my loved ones. I never thought I’d say this, but I genuinely love my body the way it is. Period. If you’re going through disordered eating or body obsession right now...THERE IS HOPE! If I can do it, anyone can. You have to start somewhere!
For this post, I teamed up with my girl Shelby Lawson from Bloom Fit Training. Shelby founded Bloom Fit in order to start a conversation about body image in the fitness industry. BFT offers a Body Positivity Certification for group fitness instructors and personal trainers. Even if you’re not in the fitness industry, you can come and take the workshop because it is SO worth attending if you want to improve your self-love and body image and also bond with a bunch of like-minded people.
THREE WAYS TO ROCK YOUR BIKINI BODY
1. Try to stop body checking
I’ve mentioned this before, but it really applies when you’re in a bikini because you’re more exposed and feeling out of your element. Body checking is constantly comparing yourself to others, obsessively trying to catch your reflection, maybe even sucking in your tummy nonstop and just generally being ultra aware of how your appearing. I know, I know. IT’S HARD TO STOP THIS! Especially when you’ve been doing it for years. Shelby and I have both experienced this and we feel your pain. It’s hard not to focus on your body when you feel like it’s all out there for everyone to see, but the more often you do it, the easier it’ll get. It’s just like flexing a muscle so look at this as a practice that’ll get better with time. Anytime I catch myself body checking, I gently bring myself back to the present moment with deep breaths and reassurance that my body is fine the way it is. We all have unique vessels and that should be celebrated. It keeps life interesting!
2. FIND A SUIT YOU’RE COMFORTABLE IN!
I have a confession to make...I know this post is about bikinis, but I just bought a one-piece swimsuit and I LOVE it! It’s so comfy and I feel like everything is held in. I can do cannon balls without worrying about one half of my swimsuit floating around in the water after I jump in. Because life’s too short not to cannon balls!.... Even though I know the getting your hair wet struggle is real.
The moral of the story is to find swimwear that you feel COMFORTABLE in! It might totally change the course of your day by the pool or at the beach if you’re not having to constantly fix your swimsuit or if you feel concerned over the way you look. Of course, you can still find something flattering AND comfy (hello high waist bikini bottoms!), but also, it’s not your job to look sexy if you don’t want to! Show up how YOU want to show up and your comfort is more important than rocking the latest trendy suit.
3. FOCUS ON FUN!
Why are you in a bikini in the first place? Getting some Vitamin D? Enjoying the company of friends and family? Partying your tush off? Whatever the reason may be, focus on the fun you’re having and practice staying in the moment. When everyone is showing skin, I know it’s difficult not to compare yourself or be self-conscious, but the more you focus on the conversations you’re having, games you’re playing, and the good food you’re eating, the less regret you’ll have later. Keep reminding yourself WHY you’re there in the first place.
I used to go to pool parties and I wouldn’t eat any of the delicious food that was out because I’d be so concerned about getting “bloated” and not looking svelte. Now, bring on the burgers! Eating good food with good company is part of the fun. I don’t want to look back at my life and think that I was too distracted and concerned about my appearance and to think that I missed out on connecting with others and tasting all life has to offer.
